Be Water tells the story of Bruce Lee’s life, focusing mainly on the difficulties he faced due to the racism and intolerance towards Asian people that existed in the United States, particularly in the world of Hollywood. Stock footage, interviews, family photos and the testimony of three people particularly close to him – his wife Linda Cadwell, his daughter Shannon Lee and his student Kareem Abdul Jabbar – provide an engaging narrative that manages to capture Lee’s charisma, his passion, his philosophy and the eternal beauty and wonder of his art. The title of the film, Be Water, comes from one of Lee’s most famous quotes: “Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend”.
Sii acqua, amico mio”.
